You will never have to worry about a flat stone, if you use the ceramic sharpener, since the material is very durable and ultra-hard. There is one downside to using this type of sharpening stone and that is, it is most often not available in a coarse grade. If you are lucky enough to find a coarse grade ceramic stone, you will be disappointed, by the “glaze” build up, which will cause the stone to lose its effectiveness. Of course, it will take a while, before the “glaze” begins to build up, but it is inevitable.

There are several complications that will be present if you have a dull knife. First, the knife’s blade will become slightly ineffective. The level of effectiveness will be determined by the dullness of the blade. If you have allowed it to dull significantly, the blade might not even make the necessary cut! I bought this in April and it's no longer sharpening my kitchen knives to it's once great way. At first, it was doing a fantastic job and sharpened the kitchen knives as expected making them very very sharp. Now, it's just something I don't bother using anymore because I'll need to touch the knives to a honing stone to make them sharp. I did give it 3 stars because at first it was truly amazing and now it's not worth being in my kitchen.

Don't know. Not sure that I really care, as these stones definitely did the job that was asked of them, and did it with ease, even for a beginner whetstone user. I'll probably stick with them, at least until I get a lot more experience. You might not need to spend hundreds of pounds to get the best knife sharpener, but you do need to know what you're doing. Warner gave me a crash course in the technique. As a newbie to this method, it took a while to get used to (especially since Warner handed me a knife that had never previously been sharpened) but after half an hour's practice and a little encouragement, I got the hang of it. To renew a dull edge, sharpeners use abrasives. By running the knife against the abrasive, you can strip away metal and restore the edge. Different sharpeners use different abrasives: diamond, ceramic, tungsten carbide, natural stone, and manufactured stone, to name a few. I've only used it to touch up the edge on an ESEE RB3 and a pocket folder so far, but it has done very nicely for those tasks. I found that using the rounded edge works best for me in order to be able to run the length of the blade without hitting the leather lanyard. I'll hopefully try it out soon on fish hooks, too.
